About

Description

Dwarkadhish Temple, also known as Jagat Mandir, is a historic Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, worshipped here as Dwarkadhish, the Lord of Dwarka. Located in the sacred coastal city of Dwarka in Gujarat, the temple is one of the most important pilgrimage sites associated with Lord Krishna and is traditionally counted among the four Char Dham pilgrimage destinations. The magnificent five-storey temple features a tall shikhara, intricately carved architecture and 72 pillars. The temple attracts devotees throughout the year, with particularly large gatherings during Krishna Janmashtami.

History

According to Hindu tradition, Dwarka was the kingdom of Lord Krishna and the city is closely associated with Krishna's life. The temple has a long religious and archaeological history. The present structure is generally associated with the medieval period and is traditionally attributed to Vajranabha, Krishna's great-grandson, while the existing architectural form developed through later construction and renovations. The temple has experienced periods of damage and rebuilding over the centuries and remains one of Gujarat's most significant Krishna pilgrimage centres.
