It is known for its beautifully carved exterior, sculptures of gods and goddesses, and the marble image of Rukmini Devi in the sanctum. The temple is an important part of the Dwarka pilgrimage circuit and is especially associated with the festival of Rukmini Ashtami.

History

The Rukmini Devi Temple has a long traditional history. It is believed in some accounts to date back to the 5th century BC, while the present architectural form is generally associated with the 12th century; Wikipedia also notes that the present structure is believed to have been built in the 19th century, reflecting reconstruction and development over time. Gujarat Tourism describes the temple as more than 2,500 years old in tradition and identifies the present temple with the 12th century. The temple follows the Nagara style of architecture and is richly decorated with carved figures of gods, goddesses, human figures and elephants.
