About

Description

Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, also known as Nagnath Mahadev, is a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and traditionally revered as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of India. The temple is located in the Dwarka region of Gujarat and is an important stop on the Dwarka pilgrimage circuit. The sacred shrine is associated with the ancient Daarukavanam tradition and is particularly revered by devotees of Lord Shiva. The temple complex is also famous for its monumental seated statue of Lord Shiva, which is approximately 25 metres (82 feet) high.

History

According to the traditional legend associated with the temple, a Shiva devotee named Supriya was imprisoned by the demon Daaruka. Supriya and other devotees continued chanting the name of Lord Shiva, invoking Shiva's divine presence. Lord Shiva appeared as Nageshwar and defeated Daaruka, protecting his devotees. The shrine is therefore associated with Shiva's manifestation as Nageshwar, the Lord of serpents. The site has a long religious history, while archaeological excavations in the surrounding area have indicated evidence of earlier settlements. Incredible India notes archaeological evidence of five earlier cities at the site.
