About
Description
Sivasagar Sivadol is a historic Hindu Shiva temple on the bank of Sivasagar Tank (Borpukhuri) in Sivasagar town, Assam. The present shrine was built in 1734 CE during the Ahom period, under Swargadeo Siva Singha and commissioned by his chief queen, Bar Raja Ambika (Queen Ambika, also known as Madambika). The brick-and-stone tower rises about 104 feet (32 metres), with a golden kalasha of about 8 feet, and stands in an Ahom heritage landscape that also includes Vishnudol and Devidol beside the tank. The principal deity is a Shiva Lingam in the garbhagriha, described in architectural sources as set in an unusual reverse orientation. Visitor sources differ on daily hours, and festival schedules can change — confirm current darshan times before you travel. October to March is the more comfortable season; Mahashivaratri draws the largest crowds.
History
Sivasagar Sivadol stands on the bank of Sivasagar Tank, also called Borpukhuri, in the town of Sivasagar. It is a living Hindu temple and the centrepiece of a historic Ahom temple complex. The tank itself was built in the early 18th century, remains a major landmark of the town, and attracts migratory birds.
The present temple was built in 1734 CE under Ahom king Swargadeo Siva Singha. It was commissioned by Bar Raja Ambika — Queen Ambika, also known as Madambika — his chief queen. Three shrines stand beside the tank: Sivadol, dedicated to Shiva; Vishnudol (Bishnudol), dedicated to Vishnu, with an ornamental honeycomb-like tower; and Devidol (Joidol), dedicated to Durga, with an undulating tower. Smaller Rama and Hanuman shrines are associated with the complex.
The architecture is Ahom, in brick and stone. The main tower is about 104 feet (32 metres) high. Its base is about 195 feet in circumference, and the golden kalasha, or finial, is about 8 feet. The ridged shikhara has four angashikharas. The antarala has a do-chala roof of the kind used on traditional Assamese houses. Floral ornament and sculptural panels cover the exterior.
The principal deity is a Shiva Lingam in the garbhagriha. Architectural sources describe an unusual reverse setting, or orientation, of the lingam. Exterior sculptures include Durga fighting Mahishasura, and images of Durga shown with 2, 4, 6, 10, and 16 arms. Together they reflect Shaiva, Shakta, and broader Hindu traditions under Ahom patronage.
Worship continues at the complex. Mahashivaratri is especially important and is marked by a large fair. Dol Yatra and Rath Yatra are observed at Vishnudol, and Durga Puja is observed at Devidol in September–October. The Government of Assam also highlights an International Shiva Festival in Sivasagar, traditionally held in March. Published opening hours differ between sources, and festival schedules can change, so visitors should confirm details locally before planning darshan.
Jorhat Airport is the closest practical airport. By rail, Sivasagar Town Railway Station serves the town, and Simaluguri Junction is another railhead. The temple is within Sivasagar town and is connected by road to the rest of Upper Assam. October to March is generally the more comfortable time to visit; Mahashivaratri is the main festival but is more crowded.
