Shree Mahakali Mataji Temple, popularly known as Pavagadh Mahakali Temple, is one of Gujarat's most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites and is regarded as one of the Shakti Peethas dedicated to Goddess Kali. Perched at an altitude of around 800 metres (2,625 ft) on Pavagadh Hill, the temple offers breathtaking views of the surrounding plains and attracts millions of devotees every year. History

The history of Pavagadh Mahakali Temple dates back several centuries and is deeply connected with Hindu mythology and regional history. According to tradition, the temple is believed to mark the place where the toe of Goddess Sati fell, making it one of the sacred Shakti Peethas.

The hill of Pavagadh has been an important place of worship since ancient times. During the medieval period, it became part of the fortified city of Champaner under the Chauhan rulers. Later, Sultan Mahmud Begada conquered Champaner in the 15th century, yet the temple continued to remain an important pilgrimage destination.

In recent years, the temple underwent major redevelopment, including improved pilgrim facilities and the restoration of the temple's traditional dhwaja (flag) after several centuries, enhancing both the spiritual and cultural significance of the shrine.
